Who needs to be trained in your school, academy or early years setting?
Sam Preston, our safeguarding specialist, advises:

"In terms of Prevent Duty, FGM, Child Protection 1 and 2 and CSE, all staff should receive safeguarding training as each area contains specific reporting duties which all staff need to understand in order to implement safeguarding effectively. With volunteers it is a question of how you use and manage those volunteers. The difficulty when not training volunteers is that they are not fully equipped to identify risks and that in turn impacts on the sharing of information. In terms of your training provision, OSFTED or your Local Authority cannot prescribe how you train your staff, or specify the method of training undertaken. What they will examine is whether the quality of training is appropriate and resulting knowledge levels meets the standards expected. This is why we have aligned all our training across the board to meet the OFSTED Common Inspection Framework."

What level of training should I be offering my staff?

In the past safeguarding training specifications were often talked about in levels. Today, unless that is the language used by the LSCBs own training policy, training should be not be described in terms of levels, for example, as ‘Level 3 training’, but by the role it is aimed at. Training is often advertised as, eg. Level 3, but in different areas, Level 3 means different content. Therefore it is essential that schools & academies always check what content is being described and who the training is aimed at. In line with this we have designed our training in line with the Intercollegiate Framework, which matches competencies to roles.

Will your training allow me to comply with Ofsted safeguarding requirements?

Yes. When considering purchasing training it is important to ensure your provider's content fully complies with HM Government cross departmental requirements and the practice expected within the Ofsted Common Inspection Framework. During inspection, inspectors will examine staff training records and explore if the knowledge base is sound and practice is robust.

Why should I choose SSS Learning's online training over paying a specialist consultant to visit my school or academy?

A consultant's session is fixed on a particular date, time and location, and is limited by number in each class either for reasons of room size or provision for classroom cover. This can leave some staff without training. Our secure online training can be accessed 24/7/365 from any PC, MAC, Tablet or Smartphone at any location with an Internet connection.

If you have licenced our safeguarding suite, all your staff would have access to the full range of safeguarding topics, too many to deliver, even across several consultancy sessions, for the full 12-month term of the licence.

The courses will be available for induction of any new staff throughout the 12-month licence period, something that a consultant could not cover, without significant expense to the school or academy.

If staff receive training from a consultant, followed closely by a legislation or policy change, how do they know that change has come into effect? Our online system is kept up-to-date with any changes notified to you and the courses updated.

Our training provides you with a meaningful evidence base. Your Admin dashboard allows you to monitor each individual member of staff's progress, number of attempts at taking the assessment and an audit trail for CPD evidence. The courses can also be used for governance training.
