Designated Teacher for Looked-After Children Training for School & Academy Staff

Designated Teacher for Looked-After Children Training for School & Academy Staff

Statistically, looked after children and those who were previously looked after are regarded as being vulnerable from a safeguarding point of view and experience barriers in maximising their full potential. Many looked after children will have previously experienced violence, abuse or neglect and these adverse childhood experiences can have a huge impact on their mental health and wellbeing and make them more vulnerable to perpetrators and abusive behaviours.

From 1 September 2009, the governing bodies of all maintained schools are required under the Children and Young Persons Act 2008 to appoint a Designated Teacher to promote the educational achievement of looked-after children and previously looked-after children on the school roll.

This course is designed to guide and support staff undertaking this role in accordance with HM Government statutory guidance.
